The best local museum with a permanent display on the development of and finds from the Gwent Levels. Highlights include the skeleton of an auroch (prehistoric wild cow) and parts of trackways and wooden buildings. The museum also holds the conserved remains of the Romano-British, Barlands Farm Boat and the 18th century Tredunnock boat. A walk along the waterfront will lead you past the site of the discovery of the Newport Ship beneath the Riverside Arts Centre to the mid-15th century Newport Castle, built by the Duke of Buckingham, with its fine tidal water gate.
