Chepstow Castle & Museum
Park in the pay and display car park below the castle.
The town of Chepstow is dominated by its magnificent castle in the care of Cadw. It has buildings dating from the Norman period to the 17th century. Of particular interest to SELRC members is the ingenious way that freshwater was captured from the base of the cliff, how wine and beer was winched into the cellar and food into the kitchen from boats moored in the River Wye. Opposite the car park is Chepstow Museum, which gives the background to Chepstow as an important port, particularly for the export of timber, oak bark and fish, and for the import of wine. Take a walk from the cast-iron bridge of 1816, built on the site of the medieval wooden bridge, along the Back, Chepstows waterfront, where 18th century warehouses and the Tudor slipway survive. Refreshment can be taken at the Bridge and Boat Inns like generations of sailors before you.
