Caldicot Castle

Caldicot Castle, Caldicot NGR ST 487 886

Take B4245 through the town follow signs for Caldicot Castle Country Park.
An important masonry castle with remains dating from the early 13th to the late 14th centuries. Historically the site was accessible from the sea. Particularly interesting are the round keep and fine south gatehouse. Run by Monmouthshire County Council as a museum set within a country park. A network of paths takes you around the castle and east onto the floodplain of the River Nedern. Here the lake, when excavated in the late 1980s, revealed a complex of late Neolithic and Bronze Age wooden structures including a fishtrap, riverside mooring, sewn boat plank and a bridge.
