Field Day at Peterstone Wentlodge and Great Wharf

Sunday 30 September, 2007

Leaders: Martin Bell, Alex Brown, Stephen Rippon, John Allen

Maps: Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Sheet 171 (Cardiff and Newport)

Equipment: The coast is exposed and it is essential to have warm, waterproof clothing. As the intertidal zone is wet and can be muddy, wellington boots are preferable to leather ones. The seawall and muddy shore can be slippery and it is advisable to bring for support either a light spade of a walking stick with a broad ferrule. A spade can also be used to explore sedimentary sections.

Assembly: Leave vehicles in Peterstone Wentlooge and assemble at 1100 on the main road by the Church (ST 288801).

Morning: Short tour to examine the character and features of the Romano-British and medieval landscapes, and history of the salt marshes and seawall.

Lunch (45 minutes): Bring sandwiches and something to drink in order to enjoy a picnic lunch on the seawall with magnificent views over the outer Severn Estuary.

Afternoon: A further examination of the salt marshes and the relationship and meaning of their various elements. A tour of the intertidal zone (ST 263792, low tide: c. 1700) to examine the evidence for late Neolithic and Bronze Age activities associated with palaeochannels on the prehistoric wetlands and for Romano-British field systems now overtaken by marine erosion.

Departure: no later than 1630
